DR Chokes

Also listed as DR Coils

Drum core, high saturation current

A DR choke winds magnet wire onto a drum-shaped core — a cylindrical bobbin with a flange at each end — rather than a closed ring. The open magnetic path gives up some of the EMI performance of a toroid, but it lets the core run at a higher flux density before saturating, which is why drum-core construction is chosen where the current carries a large ripple or surge component on top of a DC bias, such as at a rectifier output. The drum shape is also a simple, machine-windable bobbin, which keeps the part compact and repeatable at volume. DR chokes are specified by inductance, rated current, and saturation current together, since the saturation point — not the DCR — is usually the limiting factor in a rectifier or power-conversion circuit.

Insulation

Enamelled magnet wire wound onto the drum core, with an oven-dried varnish impregnation over the finished winding for mechanical stability and moisture resistance.

Two ways to get the numbers

  • Catalog datasheet

The factory's product catalog, covering the line as a whole. Per-family datasheets are not published separately.

  • Your requirement, our part number

Send the rating, voltages, footprint, and termination you need. We come back within 48 hours with a part number and the figures behind it.

Per-part specifications for the DR Chokes series are not listed on this page yet. Confirm the inductance, rated current, saturation current, and DCR for a specific part number with a quote through the custom inquiry.

Typical applications

  • Output chokes in rectifier and DC power supply circuits
  • Ripple filtering after a bridge or switch-mode rectifier
  • Energy-storage inductors in buck and boost converter stages
  • Input chokes for motor drive and inverter front ends
  • Filtering in battery charger and welding power supplies
  • General-purpose power inductors where saturation headroom matters more than EMI
