An external power adapter converts line voltage to a regulated low-voltage output for an end device, either as AC-DC (rectified and filtered, sometimes switch-mode) or AC-AC (transformer-only, no rectification). Adapters ship as desktop ('brick'), wall-plug, or plug-in styles, with the transformer or converter stage enclosed in plastic or metal. Output is fixed to a single voltage and current rating per part, sized to the load and terminated with a barrel connector, bare leads, or a plug matched to the target region. Enclosure and cordset selection typically follow the deployment: wall-plug for compact, low-power devices; desktop for higher-power loads that need a separate output cable.
